Trip description: From the Zanser Alm car park follow the road in the direction of the Sass Rigais guesthouse, where a forestry road leads across the meadows and then through the forest beside a stream, on into the valley until you come to a place called Tschantschenon.

At this point you come to the road which leads from the Zanser Alm pastures to the Schlüterhütte. From there, climb up to the Gampenalm following the short cut through the bends (2.062 m, 1 hr.)

The footpath marked 35 leads across the meadows to a rocky slope. Follow the bends in the road to the Schlüterhütte refuge above grassy slopes and gullies (2.297 m, 45 min.).

From the refuge, follow the trail marked 4 uphill north-westwards to the nearby Kreuzkofeljoch pass (2.340 m, signposted), then northwards across flat grassy terrain to the Kreuzberg saddle and across extensive grassy slopes on the eastern side to the Peitlerscharte gap (2.357 m, 45 min.).

Rock-climbing equipment essential!
The pathway then leads north-eastwards up a steep grassy slope and across a steep rocky basin on the mountain’s southern slope, then meanders up to the broad saddle in rocky terrain beneath the peak (2.765 m, 1 hr.).

The route to the summit appears difficult and forbidding with overhanging rocks and ridges, though in reality it is relatively easy and not particularly exposed.

Once you have overcome the secured route among the rocks the stony pathway leads up to the broad summit of the Peitlerkofel (2. 875 m, 30 min.). The descent follows the same route down to Zams (3 hrs.).
