Probably the most famous subject in Val di Funes/Villnöss Valley: the Church of St. Magdalena and the Odle peaks

Church of St. Magdalena

The church dedicated to St. Magdalene is a very old church that is located in a place where sacrifices to the pagan gods took place, probably since prehistoric times. The first building is mentioned in the chronicles of the year 1394, of which only the church tower remains.

The interior of the church is characterized by Baroque elements. The altar shows St. Magdalene, the patron saint of the church in an attitude of contrition, to her sides the sculptures of Saint Peter, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and Jerome. Remarkable are the paintings on the choir vaults by the Ladin artist Johann M. Peskoller, made in 1928.

The chapel in the cemetery, with the tiny altar of the 17th century, gives a very ancient impression.

Every three years, the male pilgrims of the Val Badia gather in St. Magdalena during their pilgrimage to the former episcopal see Sabiona/Säben.
