Traditional livestock farming leads in many places in South Tyrol to the production of a variety of dairy products, like cheese and yogurt. Even in Val di Funes there are still some farmers working the milk of their cows and producing high quality products. Alpine cheese from Val di Funes is made from delicious mountain milk. Depending on its fat content, there are different types of cheese. In small cheese dairies, directly on the farm or at an alpine hut, the cheese is made exclusively from natural, untreated milk.
In the heart of the Puez-Odle Nature Park lies Malga Kaserill/Kaserill Alm at 1,920 m above sea level, with a stunning panoramic mountain view. Thomas works the milk and makes different types of cheeses and yogurt, which can be tasted during a typical Tyrolean “Marende” snack. The various dairy products are also available for sale.
Also at the Gsoi Hof farm at S. Pietro, an old farmhouse of the 13th century, various dairy products are made by processing the fresh milk. In autumn, they open their traditional "Stube" where to enjoy homemade and agricultural products.
At the Bio-Hof-Käserei Petrunderhof farm at S. Valentino the milk is the raw material for different dairy products. They produce cream chees and semi-hard cheese, as well as yoghurt, from organic milk. Since 2015 the farm is classified as organic farm.
Hiking tip: The Cheese Walk
From Malga Zannes/Zanser Alm the tour takes you along the path no. 32 uphill to Malga Kaserill, where Thomas produces excellent cheese and yogurt from fresh milk of their cows. Shortly after, on the left, take the path no. 31 towards Malga Wörndleloch Alm, where delicious "Ziegerkas" (typical mountain cheese) and fresh butter, made with mountain milk, can be tasted. From here, follow the signposts to Gampen Alm. Descend along path no. 35, and then turn right on path no. 6 in direction Malga Zannes/Zanser Alm.
